Measuring success: Abinna's Story

Updated: Mar 11, 2023

How do we ensure our candidates are making progress. After 3 years, we look how far our candidates have come and measure the changes in their rehabilitation journey.

Ghanian born Abinna Musah served time in and out of prison and ensured her last stint in Bronzefield was her last. Abinna learnt the basics of garment-making and sewing in East Legon, Ghana but wanted to unlearn her outdated techniques and improve her pattern cutting.

"I wasted a lot of time in prison but my mentors at Impact taught me how to have patience and deal with members of the public in a patient way as dressmaking can come with demanding and detailed requirements. Whilst in Ghana, I first learned how to use a vintage machine and knew I definitely wanted to go into Tailoring. I attended their introduction workshop and was placed on the sewing course when I was released in 2019. The training helped me to understand how to thoroughly use a heavy duty machine, understand patterns, textures, using 3D designs in Adobe. I was hooked!"

Upon acquiring the garment making skill, Abinna began using social media to upload her designs and continuously enters fashion shows within UK and Africa to promote her brand.

The Ghanian born states her biggest challenge was "dealing with never ending requests that constantly change, although at first it got irritating, I had to deal with this in a polite way and it actually further increased my skillset, for every problem that came up or garment that needed tweaking. I knew how to deal with it as rose up and learned new tricks. The foundation allowed me to be my authentic self and be in the company of other woman that also desired progress."
